VISIONING A SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY
It is estimated that around 50% of the world’s population now lives in cities and urban areas. These communities provide both challenges and opportunities for environmentally conscious development. In order to make them more sustainable, building design and practice, as well as perception and lifestyle must adopt sustainability thinking.
Sustainability describes how biological systems remain diverse and productive over time. For humans it is the potential for long-term maintenance of happiness, comfort, safety and health which in turn depends on the wellbeing of the nature and the responsible use of resources.
Sustainable communities need good governance, public participation, working in partnership, excellent public services and civic pride. They are about learning from the mistakes of the past. They encompass the synergy of social, economic and environmental planning.
